A story and a lesson shared by Shaykh Adnan Zuhar, may Allah preserve him:

One day, a childhood friend and I were together and we had in our possession one dirham. It neither belonged solely to me nor solely to my friend.

We discussed how to spend it and agreed that we should get something to eat.

My friend said that we should buy bread and olives.

I said that we should buy a refreshing drink.

Each of us held on to their opinion and the argument got heated. Without any solution, the only way out was to flip a coin in the air: heads meant we went with his opinion and tails meant we went with mine.

So I threw the coin towards the heavens, expecting salvation. It fell to ground and rolled towards some little grass and disappeared. We searched and searched but couldn’t find it.

We ended up neither eating bread and olives or enjoying a cool drink.

And that is the reality of disagreements in everything, when one side does not give in out of either humility or by preferring others over oneself: numerous bigger objectives are lost.

This is especially true when disagreements are about secondary issues which, because of the intransigence of hardliners, remain as disagreements while fellowship, love, tenderness, and harmony depart – and these are the precious capital of faith.

كنت وصديقُ الطفولة يوما مُجتمِعَيْن وفي ملكنا دِرهمٌ، ولم يكن أحق بدرهمه مني ولا أنا أحقَّ بدرهمي منه…

فتذاكرنا في طريقة صرفه، ثم اتفقنا أن نشتري به شيئا نأكله…

فقال صديقي: نشتري به خبزا وزيتونا، ولكني قلت: بل نشتري بها مشروبا منعشا…

فتصلَّب كلٌّ لرأيه، واشتد الخلاف، ولم نجد حلا، إلا أن نستعمل الدرهم في الرهان، فنقلبه في السماء: إن ظهر الوجه فالقول قوله، وإن ظهرت النجمة -ظهره- فالقول قولي.

فرميتُ الدرهم في السماء، منتظرين الخلاص، فسقط فتدحرج وسطَ خشواش الأرض فغاب، ثم بحثنا عنه فلم نجد له أثرا.

فلا نحن أكلنا الخبز بالزيتون، ولا نحن استعذبنا المشروب المبرد.

وهذا واقع الخلاف في كل شيء، فإنه إن لم يتنازل طرف من الأطراف تواضعا وإيثارا، فستضيع مصالح أكبر وأكثر.

خصوصا في خلافات الفروع فإنها لتصلب المتشددين فيها، تبقى خلافات، لكنها تذهب بالألفة والمودة والحب والوئام، وهذا رأس مال الإيمان.
